“Listen to the land” Nature Assemblages

I began creating nature assemblages while living in the hills above Ashland, Oregon. During my daily nature walks, I found myself drawn to the process of gathering natural objects and creating “mandala-like” assemblages on a piece of poster board. My first assemblages included cut-up images from the calendar I had been using in 2020 and felt like a cathartic way to reframe that year as one of massive growth marked by cycles of death and rebirth, like the ones we see in nature. Now I incorporate collage images from wherever I can find them and love the depth and richness that comes from the layering process. Nothing is glued down and once I have photographed each assemblage and lived with it for a while, I either return the materials back to nature or reuse them in another art piece, making this process a study in impermanence and a practice in letting go.
